The princess cut (also called square modified brilliant) is a square stone with brilliant-style facets. Introduced in the 1980s, it became the second most popular engagement ring cut after round brilliant. Because princess cuts retain more of the rough crystal during cutting, they are typically less expensive than round brilliants at the same carat weight. Princess cuts have fewer total facets than round brilliants (usually 49–76 vs 57–58) but tend to produce larger, more defined flashes of light rather than the tiny scattered sparkle of a round.
