A customer once wrote to us with a photograph of a ring she'd bought elsewhere and a single, slightly anxious question: “Is this diamond real?” The stone was beautiful. It sparkled exactly the way a diamond should. And yet she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd bought it on trust alone — because the seller had handed her a lovely velvet box and no paperwork at all.
That feeling is the entire reason diamond certification exists. And in the lab-grown world, where you genuinely cannot tell a certified stone from an uncertified one by looking, that little report is the difference between owning a diamond and hoping you do.
So let's talk honestly about what “IGI certified” actually means — no jargon, no sales theatre.
First, what is IGI?
IGI stands for the International Gemological Institute, one of the world's largest independent diamond-grading laboratories. “Independent” is the important word. IGI doesn't sell diamonds and has no stake in whether you buy ours or anyone else's. Their only job is to examine a stone under controlled conditions and record, objectively, what it is.
For lab-grown diamonds specifically, IGI is the most widely used laboratory in the world — which is exactly why every engagement ring and stud we sell is graded by them before it ever reaches you.
What the report actually checks
An IGI report isn't a marketing certificate. It's a technical fingerprint of your specific stone. Every report confirms:
- That it is a diamond — real, crystalline carbon, laboratory-grown, chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond (not a simulant like cubic zirconia or glass).
- The 4Cs — carat weight, cut, colour and clarity, measured rather than estimated.
- A laser inscription — many lab-grown stones carry a microscopic report number on the girdle, so the paper and the diamond can always be matched to each other.
In other words, it answers our nervous customer's question permanently: yes, it's real, and here is the proof in writing.
How to read the 4Cs without feeling lost
Most people freeze when they see a grading report for the first time. You don't need to. Here's the plain-language version.
Colour
Graded D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet as a faint warmth creeps in. On our stud earrings and rings you'll often see F colour — near the very top of the colourless range, which looks crisp and white to the eye without paying for the theoretical perfection of a D.
Clarity
This measures tiny internal characteristics. VS1, which appears across much of our stud earring collection, means any inclusions are so small they're invisible without magnification. For a piece you'll actually wear, VS is the sweet spot — flawless-looking, without paying for flawless-on-paper.
Cut
The most underrated of the four. Cut is what makes a diamond throw light back at you; a poorly cut stone looks dull no matter how good its colour and clarity are. This is where craftsmanship, not just chemistry, earns its keep.
Carat
Simply the weight. A 2-carat and a 3-carat stone of the same quality will differ dramatically in presence — and in price — so carat is where your budget does most of its talking.
Why an uncertified lab-grown diamond is a risk you don't need to take
Here's the uncomfortable truth the industry doesn't always say out loud: a lab-grown diamond and a good simulant can look identical in a shop's lighting. Without a report from an independent lab, you are trusting the seller's word about the single most important fact — what the stone actually is.
Certification removes that trust exercise entirely. It's also what protects the resale and insurance value of your piece: an insurer or a future buyer wants documentation, not a verbal promise.
A certificate doesn't make a diamond beautiful — the cut does that. But it's the only thing that makes a diamond provable. Beauty you can see. Truth you have to be shown.
