Moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones and has more fire and brilliance than diamond (2.42 refractive index, 0.044 dispersion).
Moissanite was first identified in 1893 by Nobel laureate Henri Moissan, in meteorite fragments from Arizona's Canyon Diablo crater. Natural moissanite is so rare that the stones in fine jewellery today are created in a lab.

Watch it in motion
A still photograph freezes one flash and calls it the whole stone. The video runs the pendant through a slow turn, so you can see how often the facets light up and how long each flash lasts.
Seven claws hold the round brilliant, each finished as a small bead rather than a flat tip. They sit low on the crown, so very little metal crosses the face of the stone.
From the side the head is a cage: two horizontal rails with open squares between them, and nothing solid behind the pavilion. The bail tapers and folds flat against the chain.
The reverse is cut away completely. You look straight through the setting to the back of the stone, which is part of why the pendant stays light for its size.
The bail is a flat tapered loop, so the pendant sits square against the chain instead of twisting on it. On a fine cable chain it settles just below the hollow of the throat.
The head is the only raised part. There is nothing on the back to catch on a collar or the neck of a jumper.
