Moissanite was first identified in 1893 by Nobel laureate Henri Moissan, in meteorite fragments from Arizona's Canyon Diablo crater. Natural moissanite is so rare that the stones in fine jewellery today are created in a lab.

A step cut gives long flat flashes rather than small points of light. The video shows those bands opening and closing as the ring turns, which a still photograph flattens.
Square to the camera the outline is a square with its four corners cut off. Inside, flat steps run parallel to each edge and draw in towards a wide table.
On the finger the stone covers most of the width between the knuckles. The band all but disappears behind it, so the square is the only shape you read.
From the side the head is a square cage with a window cut through each wall. The stone sits down inside that cage rather than perching on top of it.
The back shows the base of the stone through the open frame, and a plain band that keeps the same width and the same round section the whole way round.
The table on top is wide and the steps are shallow, so you look straight down into the stone instead of at a scatter of small facets. It reads colourless in every photograph, with grey and white flashes rather than coloured ones.
The claws are slim and sit on the four cropped corners. That leaves the long edges of the square clear, which is what keeps the outline sharp from the front.
