A step cut does not flash the way a round brilliant does. It shows long flat planes that go light and dark in turn, and a square outline that stays square as the ring turns.
Look into the table and the facets cross in an X. That pattern is how an Asscher cut is read, and it only stays clean if the stone is cut square and set square.
The back is left open, so you can see straight through the stone from below. Nothing is packed behind it, which is also why the warm tone holds rather than going muddy.
Away from studio lights the stone reads as a warm honey tone with the corners a shade paler. The white metal stops it from drifting towards brown.
On the hand the stone covers most of the width of the finger. The shank stays narrow where it meets the palm, so the ring does not press against the fingers either side.
Six claws hold the stone: a single one at the top, a single one at the bottom, and a pair on each side. The pairs sit where the cropped corners are, which is the part of a square stone most likely to catch on something.
