Customise this pieceAn Oval Inside A Halo
The ring of small stones does not touch the oval. There is a band of open metal between the two, and turning the ring is the clearest way to see that the halo is raised rather than flush.
Small round stones run the whole way around the centre, but the halo stands away from it with daylight showing between the two. The oval itself is held at four points.
From behind, the head is built from a row of arched windows cut under the halo. Each small stone is open at the back, and so is the oval in the middle.
On the hand the halo takes the head out to the full width of the finger. The shank behind stays narrow and plain, which keeps the weight of the design at the top.
The side view shows how the head is made. The halo rests on a pierced gallery of small arches, and the oval is lifted inside it on four claws, so the two sit at slightly different heights.
That gap is what keeps the centre stone reading as its own shape instead of merging into the ring of small stones around it.
